4 Secrets to Making Your YES Count

Are you good at saying YES? What about if the question is outside your comfort zone?

Seven years ago, HR Expert and 304 Coaching founder Jen Thornton received a phone call. The company she worked for wanted to send her to Hong Kong for several months. Without really thinking about it, she said yes!

A few weeks later, she was in a new place where she knew no one and didn’t even speak the language. But it became a pivotal moment in her life, all because of one YES.

Over the course of the next several years, because of that first initial YES, Jen was asked to work on several different continents, gaining the experience and confidence she needed to open her own coaching business. Helping well-known organizations create environments where people are respected and encouraged to be the best version of themselves, she has learned a thing or two about success both from her own personal experiences and her clients, and some attributes attached to it…

True growth – and ultimate success – happens when you know how to say YES.

Here are the 4 secrets to making your next YES count:

  1. All Who Wander Aren’t Lost

The truth is, saying yes is only the beginning of your decision. And it doesn’t mean you’re in store for an easy ride. Expect ups and downs. One day you may hit the ground running, another you may ask yourself: ‘What have I done?’

Just like exploring a new city, growth and change can surprise you at every turn. Embrace the chance to wander as you navigate your YES. Start by counting every single win on your journey – both big and small.

And remember, the finish line may not be right around the corner. Don’t force your way to the final result. Simply allow it to show up through working towards your goal.

  1. Use Your Edge in New Ways

What’s your superpower? We all have one. Maybe it’s your creativity. Or your strong organizational skills. Perhaps it’s your ability to make those around you feel at ease. Jen calls this your edge.

By definition, the edge is the sharpest side of a blade. Chances are, the job you hold, the relationship you’re in, and most of your life choices are the result of your edge. But this power can be your best friend or your worst enemy. With too much use, it becomes dull.

As you grow, that same edge may not serve you in the same way. People change, job expectations shift, and you may find yourself frustrated by negative feedback about how you show up.

It’s time to learn how to use your edge in new ways. When you can employ that same power in multiple ways, you’ll move forward.

Here’s how: first, write down your wins. As you recall the successes in your life, you’ll start to see a pattern. This pattern is the result of your edge. Once you have this knowledge you can deploy your power more purposefully. With practice, it will get sharper and more impactful.

  1. Explore Your NO’s

But what if you shouldn’t say yes? This is a critical question. It’s true that sometimes it just isn’t right, and a no is warranted. However, there’s a good chance you’re hiding from a yes or two.

One of the most important secrets to making your YES count is to explore your NO’s.

A yes can be scary. But to experience real growth you need to get comfortable in the places you’re hiding from. The key to your success is a yes attitude – regardless of how you feel. If it makes you nervous, it might be just what you need.

  1. Don’t Forget to Be You

There’s a lot of talk about authenticity these days. But sometimes being who you are can backfire. Whether you’re navigating a faltering relationship or a difficult supervisor, it’s tempting to smooth things over and be who others want you to be.

Resist the urge to give in and don’t forget to be you.

Find a career you can do in your own style. Remember this wisdom: your authentic self won’t please everyone. The whole world isn’t going to sign up for who you are and that’s okay. But when you’re not yourself, nothing will feel right.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be willing to change. After all, what makes you successful – your edge – can also hold you back. That’s why it’s important to learn to use your power in new ways. When you do so authentically, it will lead you in the right direction.

Be sure to make your YES count – then get ready for growth and success no matter what path you take.
