In The Wizard of Oz, young Dorothy and 3 misfit friends follow the Yellow Brick Road in search of a great and powerful wizard. They’re convinced he will help them find what’s missing in their lives. Of course, when they get there (SPOILER ALERT), they discover the wizard is a ruse, and that everything they were looking for they had within themselves all along.
Sound familiar? That’s what RELAUNCHING your life is all about, and your Yellow Brick Road is the path that leads to the best version of YOU. But it’s not always that simple. Life happens and your SETBACKS may lead you off course.
The fact is, you’re going to get booted, elbow-slammed, even hip-bumped off the road. But each SETBACK is actually a vital component to the path ahead. They point the way, if you learn from them and then RELEASE them.
Here are FIVE STEPS you can do NOW to RELEASE your past.
- REVIEW YOUR SETBACKS
To start, it’s important to REVIEW those tough moments. This isn’t easy. In fact, you’d probably rather put up a wall and AVOID the past. I do this, my clients do this, and my guess is you do, too.
But over time, the walls can grow taller, thicker, nearly impenetrable. If necessary, start slow and chip away at reviewing your setbacks. Really look at how you got where you are, and why. Once you do, you can begin to RELEASE the past.
- TAKE RESPONSIBILTY
Has something happened in your life that you just can’t get over? If so, you just put another brick in the wall. Instead, practice AWARENESS surrounding the setback.
Regardless of what happened, you a played a part in what happened – the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s imperative that you RECOGNIZE your part and take RESPONSIBILITY in order to move forward.
- CLARIFY YOUR INTENTIONS
Do your ACTIONS truly reflect your INTENTIONS? If you move on, the SETBACKS in your life are resolved and you may not actually want to let that part of your life disappear.
But here’s the thing: when you RELEASE your past, you’re not erasing it, but rather diminishing the hold it has on you. You’re getting to the ROOT CAUSE of why you’re holding on, and only then can you MOVE ON.
- GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO HEAL
If you break your leg, you don’t automatically start walking on it. You have to be gentle. Your heart is the same way. It, too, needs time to heal.
If you don’t – and instead you sweep your past under the rug – at some point you’re going to pick that rug up and there’s going to be a bunch of junk underneath. No matter what type of trauma or setback or transition you’re working to RELEASE, take time to heal.
- PLAN YOUR REBOOT
When my computer is acting up, I usually wind up hitting REBOOT. This is good advice when your life is off course. Think about what’s going to help you feel better about yourself., what fuels you. This may mean big changes in your life, but if you’re being honest with yourself, you’ll know that’s the path forward.
Big or small, work to plan your REBOOT. This will help get you back on the road and ready to MOVE ON.
In just 5 steps, you can RELEASE your past SETBACKS and get back on the path to SUCCESS.
